What we think an app is for

We want people to be able to stop.

An app has done its job when you can finish what you came to do and get on with your day.

That shapes what goes in. A notification, a prompt or a reminder needs a reason you would agree with. A feature that exists mainly to bring you back does not pass.

Where we look

Some tasks get tolerated because they look too small to question: finding something you saved, working out the next step, entering the same information again. Each one is minor. Together they make a day harder than it needs to be.

dysy works. starts with those moments. We ask whether an app would help and what it would need to do well. Sometimes the honest answer is that another app is not needed.

What we mean by care

By care we mean specific things: a label that tells you what a button does, a saved change you do not have to second-guess and a mistake you can undo.

Something can look simple and still ask too much of the person using it. We want the design to hold up in use, not only in a screenshot.

Four questions, and what would stop us

Before we commit to an idea, it has to answer four questions. Each one has a condition that sends us back to the start.

  1. TaskWhat gets easier? We stop if we can only describe the idea as a category, such as productivity.
  2. ScopeWhat is enough? We stop if the first version needs a second job to be worth opening.
  3. ReturnWhat if you stop halfway? We are not ready if it only works on an uninterrupted first try.
  4. CostWhat does it ask of you? We are not ready if data, accessibility and upkeep are missing from the plan.

How we decide

Dropping an idea at any of these points is an acceptable outcome. We would rather find that out early.
